António Guterres, United Nations (UN) secretary-general said that the organization should adopt blockchain technology. According to the report, Guterres believes that blockchain should be one of the technologies used by the UN.

The secretary said:

“For the United Nations to deliver better on our mandate in the digital age, we need to embrace technologies like blockchain that can help accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.”

Guterres has already spoken about the potentials of blockchain technology several times. Last year, he mentioned blockchain when he created a “High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation,” which explicitly put blockchain technology on the agenda.

In September 2018, he also spoke of how trust in national institutions, among states and in a rule-based global order has declined and how technologies, particularly blockchain, can help decrease the issue.

He added:

“Organized criminal networks lurk on the dark web, profiting from encryption and near-anonymous cryptocurrency payments to traffic in people and illegal goods.”

In May 2018, The UN Office for Project Service (UNOPS) is collaborated with the  IOTA Foundation to perceive how the project’s distributed ledger technology can assist the UN to streamline its workflows.

The UNOPS declared the partnership stating the two organizations are looking into enhancing the operational efficiency of the UN office applying IOTA’s tangle technology.

UNOPS special advisor on blockchain technology Yoshiyuki Yamamoto stated, the startup notably doesn’t use a blockchain the way network as Bitcoin and Ethereum do yet this is one reason the UN division chose to work with the foundation.

Yamamoto added:

“Organized criminal networks lurk on the dark web, profiting from encryption and near-anonymous cryptocurrency payments to traffic in people and illegal goods.”
