The Blockstream Satellite network broadcasts the Bitcoin blockchain around the world 24/7 for free, protecting against network interruptions and now it is possible to download a full node program without an internet connection with the updated protocol for their satellite service.

The satellite network of Blockstream carrying the Bitcoin blockchain for the first time in almost two years. The data flow is now 25 times faster and can be synced with an entire node without connecting to the web. The Blockstream satellite services allow internet-free Bitcoin transactions to the crypto users and information sharing, in almost every corner of the world. The organisation has leased six Geostationary Satellites used to broadcast the blockchain to Africa, Europe, South and North America, and the Asia Pacific region.

Announcing Blockstream Satellite 2.0

On May 4, an Announcement on the company website, the blockchain company’s Blockstream Satellite 2.0 introduces a standards-based transmission protocol, more bandwidth with additional coverage areas, and “the ability to sync a Bitcoin full node program from the genesis block up to today.” The announcement declared:

“Instead of requiring users to connect their Bitcoin full node to the internet for the initial sync—as was the case with 1.0—Blockstream Satellite 2.0 now enables full history synchronization! Blockstream Satellite users can hook up a Bitcoin full node and fully download the entirety of the Bitcoin blockchain, from the original 2009 genesis block right up to today’s latest transactions…absolutely no internet required!”

History of Bitcoin beamed from space

The Blockstream’s upgraded network is the first update since Blockstream launched an Application Programming Interface (API) in December 2018 to their first version of the protocol released on August 2017.

The DVB-S2 protocol for version 2.0 reportedly enhances spectral efficiency and signal reliability, delivers higher bitrates, and improves data capacity and bandwidth.

Samson Mow, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of Blockstream used the opportunity to take a swipe at competitive blockchain Ethereum, Tweeted:

Upcoming Satellite Kit

In addition to the Blockstream Satellite network update, Blockstream also announced the satellite kits which will soon be available for pre-order at the Blockstream Store. This kit includes a consumer-grade satellite receiver, ready to connect a Bitcoin node at home, just requires a computer running Linux, to process the received broadcasts.
